Description
LOPERAMIDE (CORAMIDE ) CAPS medication is used to treat sudden diarrhea (including traveler’s diarrhea). It works by slowing down the movement of the gut.
- This decreases the number of bowel movements and makes the stool less watery.
- Loperamide is also used to reduce the amount of discharge in patients who have undergone an ileostomy.
- It is also used to treat on-going diarrhea in people with inflammatory bowel disease.
- Loperamide treats only the symptoms, not the cause of the diarrhea (e.g., infection).
- Treatment of other symptoms and the cause of the diarrhea should be determined by your doctor.

- Avoid driving and doing other tasks or actions that call for you to be alert until you see how this medicine (loperamide capsules and tablets) affects you.
- Talk with your doctor before you drink alcohol or use other drugs and natural products that slow your actions.
- Dehydration and electrolyte problems can happen in people who have diarrhea. Talk with the doctor about what to do to prevent dehydration and electrolyte problems.
- Use with care in children. Talk with the doctor.
- If you are 65 or older, use this medicine (loperamide capsules and tablets) with care. You could have more side effects.
